The Ikhtyaruddin Citadel is the great fortress sitting over Herat in eastern Afghanistan. There can be few places that have been besieged by both
Alexander
the Great and
Genghis
Khan. The present structure is mostly from the 15th century, built by Shah Rukh the son of Timur (known in the west as
Tamerlane
.)

The photographs were commissioned for the book 'Afghanistan: Preserving Historic Heritage' (AKTC) 2017.
